Smoke and Air Quality

Air Quality Policy for Event Operations (2026)

Air Quality Index Reference: We will use the Air Quality Health Index (AQHI) as defined by Health Canada, supported by local environmental monitoring (Environment Canada and Alberta AQHI). Hourly readings will be monitored, and decisions will be based on the most current forecast and real-time data available. This is to be communicated via social media network, race site PA system and monitored Wednesday before the event through the end of the last loop. Should we get to a level 7 or above before the race emails to be send out to all competitors, if we are above an 8 and email participants about possible cancelation. Above 10 event will be cancelled.

Thresholds for Action:

● AQHI 1–3 (Low Risk): ○ Event proceeds as planned.

● AQHI 4–6 (Moderate Risk): ○ Notify participants of current conditions. ○ Monitor continuously every 4 hours.

○ Offer masks at aid stations.

○ Proceed with the event as planned.

● AQHI 7 (High Risk): ○ Notify participants of elevated risk for prolonged exposure. ○ Offer masks at aid stations.

○ Allow athletes to switch to a shorter-duration event (e.g., move from 24-h to 12-hour or 6-hour). ○ Continue monitoring every 1 hour.

○ If readings are borderline or fluctuating, the Race Director and THE PIRATES LOOP Committee will assess whether it's safe to proceed based on trajectory and latest available data.

● AQHI 8 - 10 (High Risk): ○ Race Director to initiate emergency response discussion with THE PIRATES LOOP communications and options for participants.

● AQHI 10+ (Very High Risk):

○ Race is cancelled. ○ Communicate clearly to all participants about the decision. Additional Factors:

● Exposure time of up to 24 hours means that even moderate AQHI values pose greater risk than for short-duration outdoor activities. Continuous exertion in smoky conditions increases the risk of respiratory irritation, decreased lung function, and cardiovascular stress due to fine particulate matter (PM2.5). Therefore, THE PIRATES LOOP applies stricter thresholds than general public health guidelines for casual exposure. ● Authority for Final Decision: Cancellation or modification decisions will be made by the Race Director, in consultation with the THE PIRATES LOOP RD.
